According to a report by the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), Pakistan is in imminent danger of becoming water-scarce by 2025. Factors like population explosion, climate change, inefficient use of irrigation, and lack of water storage infrastructure have contributed to exacerbating water crisis in the country. With ever-increasing water usage and lack of interest shown by past governments, these existing stressors are expected to worsen the conditions.
The current Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Mian Saqib Nisar and Prime Minister Imran Khan have taken the initiative of mass fundraising for construction of water storage resources, particularly Diamer Bhasha Dam and Mohmand Dam. The objective of this campaign is to raise awareness and finances, both locally and internationally, and address the water crisis which is anticipated to hit the country soon, if not dealt with on an urgent basis.
The Pakistani premier has also made an earnest appeal to Overseas Pakistanis for contribution in the dam fund. According to the statistics on Supreme Court of Pakistan website, total donations collected as of November 20, 2018 amount to £45.7 million, which is only a fraction of the actual funds required for constructing the dams.
The event will be covered by the famous Pakistani media house, Geo News, by running a live telethon to 36 countries. Geo News UK viewers can join this broadcast on Geo News Sky723.
